Cecilia Turner lives on the south coast of France but is heading north. “We just sold our house and are heading to Normandy,” said Turner, who is semi-retired. Her beautiful house is 20 meters from the sea with amazing views, but she and her husband have left everything behind. “I can’t stand the temperature here, it’s too hot to do anything. Hot water from the cold tap, the pool is too hot, and so is the sea!”
Turner is not alone in seeking cooler weather on the continent. As Europe swelters in the summer heat and wildfires are becoming an increasingly common occurrence, threatening homes in France, Portugal and Spain, we are seeing more and more images. The sweltering temperatures are driving some Britons away.
