Alan Maguire, who is involved in the provision of affordable housing at Highland Council, said at the moment the authority is cheaper than building new rental homes due to the high cost of construction.
“By introducing this scheme, we feel that we can deliver more affordable housing in the highlands by buying from individuals who want to sell to us instead of private sales.”
“It’s a heart and mind campaign to get people to sell their homes directly to the council to meet the needs of local communities.”
Highland Council buys properties off the market, saving sellers marketing and other costs.
After considering the suitability of the housing, an independent assessment will be made and the council will make a recommendation.
The authority has so far fielded 250 requests, completed more than 40 procurements and agreed on 10 other contracts, while another 40 cases are pending.
