I’m selling my cool house after buying it for £5,000 – it’s now worth £800,000

A house stuck in a retro period war is set to be flogged for a staggering £800,000 after being bought for a fraction of the price.

The house in Sydney, Australia was sold to the current owner in 1968 for just £5,000.

The interior has remained untouched since The Beatles dominated the sound waves with patterned wallpaper and decorative items.

But for the first time in more than 50 years, the extraordinary Paddington estate is looking for a new owner.

A 96-year-old woman who lives there said they were forced to sell because they needed a place with no standards.

Her late husband, who bought the house all those years ago, said she was “very attached” to the house and had not received many offers over the years, reports realestate.com.au.

The old woman said that her partner had spent countless hours renovating the terrace.

She said: “My husband was part of the renovation team in four houses, including ours.

“He bought the house for $10,000 (£5,000) and completed the renovation, doing the kitchen and bathroom.

“When we moved here, my husband made us a nice house, he took down the stairs and fired them.”

Her husband installed swing doors and chandeliers in the kitchen.

“He took down the wall between the two rooms on the ground floor, put up arches, built the stone fireplace and the bar with shelves,” she added.

“Enter the outdoor fireplace and gardens, including the stone-built fish tank.”

Her great-grandmother also holds many family mementos, and her granddaughter’s footprints and name are set in concrete in the center of the yard.

She said: “It’s been a great home for me.

“It got me going. We had a lot of big family dinners with my great-grandchildren and grandchildren.”

The house – which features Victorian features – is now up for auction on August 20 – and has an eye-watering guide price of £800,000.

Christopher Breeden, from property agent BrasickWhitney, described the house as one of the most unique they had ever seen.

He said: “For a 96-year-old owner to have more than 50 years of family life and memories – (it’s) special.

“Combined with its location, heritage features and accessible price point, it’s a great opportunity for a buyer to celebrate this history while giving their next living.”
