Insider advice homeowners should follow to impress a buyer when selling their home

Whether it’s changing a room with color or adding an accent with fabric or accessories – the power of color is strong. It can instantly transform any space, making rooms feel bigger, brighter, cozier and more spacious. But did you know that color is an important part of property styling? So it’s no surprise that many real estate agents are changing room colors to help their sellers get their homes off the market faster and for a better price.

But it is important to choose the right ones for the home because color has a great impact.

Here, real estate agents share some of the secrets buyers notice when they tour a home—from statement color ideas to small touches that can make all the difference.

Carolyn Gannon, a real estate agent with Compass, advises sellers to stick with a neutral color scheme.

She said: “The biggest tip when selling a house is to stay relatively neutral and have warm, cheerful colours.

Therefore, when choosing your color, it is important to consider the different light levels in the home from the paint store – whether homeowners are selling or not.

For those who keep things neutral, it can be easy to completely ignore color. However, it’s important to add pockets of vibrancy to keep your home from feeling too clinical.

Jeff Lichtenstein, president and founder of ECHO Fine Properties, suggests doing this with art and accent wall color ideas.

“Accents and patterns are the best way to add color while keeping things neutral,” he says.

“Very solid houses should be painted a more gray or neutral color with a certain warmth.

“Too dry white can come out cold and hard to see if it’s white.”

When you’re looking for a new toaster or kettle for your place, it can be hard to believe that this appliance can make an impact on the sale of your home. However, Jeff Lichtenstein suggests that this is the case.

As the agent suggests adding bright tones through artwork, she recommends adding color to your kitchen through accessories.

“Small accents like a bright yellow teapot and an inexpensive rocking chair near the island really accentuate the room,” he says.

Eyal Pasternak, founder of Liberty House Buying Group, advises sellers against using dark paint to paint the exterior of their home.

He cautions: “My tip to anyone is to avoid independent dark colors, especially on the exterior of the house.

“These look unpleasant and often require additional cleaning.”

For those who want to try dark colors, it is suggested to save the tone with tones that can stand out with a more neutral color.

This will give your home a monochromatic look that will impress buyers—and can move your home off the market quickly.
