JACKSON, Mich. (WILX) – Residents and developers looking for a place to build new homes can now look at properties in the city of Jackson, where a property sales program recently expanded to include “buildable lots.”
The city defines a buildable lot as a vacant lot or a combination of properties large enough to permit new construction of a single-family residence or multi-family dwelling.
Among the highlights of the program are:
- The city will sell these lots at a minimum price of $362.50
- Up to 100% discount on water/sewer connection
- Priority site plan review
- Preliminary property development meetings with city officials
- New home construction in an established neighborhood close to parks, schools and amenities
The city manager’s office has stepped up efforts to sell more than 800 city-owned vacant lots over the past two years. Since the end of 2020, city officials have sold 136 vacant lots and 34 existing properties for a total of $457,100 in additional revenue.
That extra revenue goes to the city’s general fund to fuel services like streets, parks and public safety.
City Manager Jonathan Green said the program will help the entire community.
“We understand there is a need for more affordable housing in the community and this is something we can do to help,” Green said. “Buildable lots are a low-cost solution for residents looking to build a new home. You’ll also have the added benefit of living with everything Jackson has to offer.”

Side lots are considered too small for new construction to sell to adjacent neighbors to add onto their property.
Existing properties are parcels with a permanent home, apartment or commercial building on the site.
